Mallet Instrument Database at Malletjazz.com

Note from the Editor: This forum for the collection of commentaries on various mallet percussion instruments has been created in response to seeing yet another online inquiry to the effect of, "...I've got the chance to buy a (insert name of manufacturer and model here) vibraphone. What's it worth? What can anyone tell me about it? Is it a good instrument?" There is a need for access to information, and it is hoped that these web pages will offer that service. Please note: This is NOT a listing of instruments for sale.

For the time being at least, this database is limited to the most common acoustic mallet percussion instruments: marimbas, vibraphones, orchestra bells, and xylophones. Mallet MIDI controllers will be added at a later date (either as part of this forum or in their own forum), and other non-electronic mallet percussion instruments (chimes, crotales, etc.) may be added if there is enough demand.

Please Note: this is a place to find answers, not a place to ask questions. Do not submit questions about mallet instruments (general or specific) to this database, or to me directly, as they will neither be posted nor responded to. If a reviewer (who addresed the instrument in question) chooses to make his/her e-mail address available to the public, consider contacting that person directly. (If they do not make their e-mail address available, please see "Disclaimer II" below.) If you're looking for information and it's not already included here in the database, well...sorry. This database is going to take time to edit and maintain, and I've got to set limits on my responsibilities as the editor/host.

Reviews will be added to the site as they are received (please be patient, as this web site is a one-man operation). Anyone who is familiar with a given mallet percussion instrument is welcome to contribute his/her thoughts and ratings. Click here if you would like to offer a review for inclusion in this database.

The reviews are organized according to manufacturer and model name/number (when available). Scroll down this page to find a list of instruments which have already been reviewed, and click on the model number or name to be taken to the reviews of that particular instrument. (If there is no link connected to that number/name, that simply means that there currently is no review of that instrument on file.)

DISCLAIMER: the views and opinions expressed on these pages are those of the respective authors, and are not necessarily shared or endorsed by James Walker or anyone else affiliated with the malletjazz.com web site. Please do not e-mail me (James Walker) looking for information on instruments reviewed by other individuals. Except for the limited number of instruments that I have reviewed, I have not seen or played the instruments reviewed on this site.

DISCLAIMER, PART II: If someone chooses not to make their e-mail address available to the public through this database, please respect that (and please respect my commitment to offering that option) and do not ask me to provide you with the unpublished e-mail address of any reviewer on this site. Not only will I not provide you with the unpublished e-mail address, I may not even respond to your inquiry at all.

DISCLAIMER, PART III: THIS IS NOT A LISTING OF INSTRUMENTS FOR SALE! I've received several e-mail inquiries from individuals looking to purchase the instruments listed in this database. This database exists purely as a form for sharing information about a given model of instrument, not as a means of advertising an instrument for sale. If you're looking to buy a vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, or glockenspiel, I hope this database can help you determine what you're looking for - but I'm not selling any instruments, nor am I in the business of putting buyers in touch with sellers or vice versa. Sorry.
